I was reading some of the old threads prior to doing
my first oil change. I decided to bring it in to my
friends garage rather than possibly fighting with it
in my driveway. The filter was locked on in a death
grip just as you guys had said. He tried with all the
usual tools and just when he was about to remove
the air filter tubes we were talking about the "old days"
and he remembered he had a metal filter cup that
was over in his old tool box, seems all the new ones
are plastic and fairly shallow so they slide off the filter.
He tapped the metal one on to the filter and it
came off with some effort, so if you can get your
hands on a metal instead of plastic unit it should
do the trick.
I havent changed the oil in my '05 yet, as it only had 3500m on it when I bought it from a dealer, and he had changed it then. So pretty soon I will do it. Found the right filter wrench at a auto parts store. I guess there are two dif sizes of these depending on what size (diameter?) of filter your vehicle uses. Seems to fit it real tight, and uses the 3/8" ratchet extension to turn it. So the filter will either turn, or the cap wrench will break, will see what happens.
Getting the factory installed filter off is not that bad of an ordeal if you use the right tools. Just get yourself the flutted filter wrench made specifically for the MC filter. You may have to tap it on, but once on us an extension with a swivel joint and just screw it off. Those that usually have the problem fight it with the convention strap and pliers type wrenches.
