Hey guys, I want yall's opinion on this: I found a 1989 Crown Victoria with a Fuel Injected 5.0, AOD trans, new stereo, and only 125,000 miles. The guy only wants $600 for it too!! I took it around the block and it runs like a top. Only thing wrong with it is the idle speed valve or whatever, no big deal. The only reason I want this car is to swap the engine and trans into my '76 F100 (302, 3 speed on the colomn). Right now I'm not driving my truck due to a slight trans leak and a bad pressure plate, also horrible mpgs. I know the motor will fit and people have done this swap before, and it can't be too hard. I was just wondering what you guys thought about this venture. Having multi-port fuel injection and an overdrive trans would be awesome the way gas prices are going, not to mention the Crown Vic's 5.0 has alot more power than the 302 I have now.
Thanks for the feedback

PS> Also, does anyone know if I'd have to get my driveshaft shortened for the AOD to fit?
It's def. possible....but if your new to wiring, it could be overwhelming to say the least. Good idea, def. possible w/o TONS of work too. I would assume the driveshaft would have to be changed in length somewhat. you'll probly need the slip from the AOD too.
Fuel pump on the frame rail, fuel lines as well as the in-tank pump would need to be swapped out as well. If you have the patience and the time, it is a great modification considering gas prices, not to mention reliability. My 55 has the complete running gear from a '89 F150 with 5.0 /aod/8.8 rear end.
After thinking about it, I'm not 100% sure you will have the same set up as mine, some had in-tank low pressure and high pressure rail pumps, some mustangs etc. and later trucks had a different type of high pressure pump in the tank. I think others have converted to pumps outside the tank but I don't know the specifics, maybe someone will be along shortly who can help us both.
If you wanted a factory floor shifter, shouldn't be that hard to stick one in. Aftermarket, I think mostly B&M, but Hurst and others make one. They use a different plate. Factory would be the cheapest way to go, should be fairly easy to find a Mustang floor shifter and make it work.
I used to use the Ford shifters all the time... when you could still find them easily (on the 70s stuff).
BTW, if you search the online auctions, classifieds, ect... to see what's out there, then go to like B&M or whatever and see if they offer the AOD install kit for whatever shifter you're interested in. I got a Megashifter a few years ago for 50 bucks, then spend like another 50 for the stuff to hook it up to a C6 (was on a Turbo 350 I think).
it should have 2 pumps. buy new or used a tank and sending unit with the low pressure pump. put the in the rail pump in. but don't forget the inertia switch. you don't want to stall or god forbid crash and have pressurized fuel pumping all over. never mind if you crash and break the line. inertia switches are available aftermarket, check napa. napa carries standard motor products which makes them. or even a used one. they rarely go bad.
