Two cats?

My '86 Bronco has two catalytic converters in-line on its single exhaust pipe. Is that the usual stock set-up?

Thanks.

And of course the first thread I look at after posting this makes mention of "the first cat"...

That answers that.

yea, i have a 96 f-150 andits got the same thing. i guess back in the day ford had a hard time getting their engined to pass smog so they just slapped an extra cat converter on. it cuts power makes it quiet, loose/loose situation there. but i live in California where enviromental standards are pretty high. so i dont know about wherever your from. damn california.

I'm in Dallas, and my Bronco just missed passing emissions testing on the hydrocarbons(175 ppm vs. 155 ppm allowable). I've ordered two new Catco converters to replace the stock ones. I've read where some folks passed with one newer cat replacing the two older ones, but I don't feel like going back to the muffler shop multiple times to piecemeal thing together...
