oil level sender

Has anybody replaced the oil sender switch by the oilpan on a 3.0? Mine seems to be seeping some oil. I'm wondering if I just unscrew it and silicone it; will it come out or does the oilpan have to be removed (so the inside nut?? can be held)?

I finally had to break down and buy a new replacement - dealer only item. I tried replacing o-ring, adding an o-ring, using a heavier bail wire to keep the sending unit tighter against the housing - all to no avail. Each time, I thought I had it licked but it would invariably start leaking again.

There is no internal nut, the entire unit just screws into the oil pan. Be aware, there is also a large fiber gasket required between the pan and housing. This does NOT come with the sending unit and must be purchased separately..

There is a spring wire bail that keeps the sensor in the housing. If prying it loose becomes a chore, you can also use a piece of cheesecloth or other tough, light material to pull back and forth in the slot to remove the bail wire.

If memory serves, I think the replacement unit from the local Ford dealership was around $45.00. You might try one of the online Ford parts sites for better pricing.

Two questions:
-Did you try gooping RTV all over the unit and housing?
-Why worry about the spring if the whole unit to will be replaced?
Thanks

most RTVs do not adhere to plastics or oily surfaces

try one of these

call or email the FTE Ford parts houses, they don't list all avail parts online
give complete description and make sure they know it's NOT the oil pressure sender but the Low Oil Level sender

Installation
  1. NOTE: Always replace gasket when removing low oil level sensor.

Install new gasket onto low oil level sensor, noting flange faces sensor and the words "pan side" are facing the oil pan (6675).
  1. NOTE: When replacing low oil level sensor using a metal gasket with a rubber O-ring, tighten sensor to 17-27 Nm (13-20 lb-ft).

Install low oil level sensor and gasket assembly. Tighten to 20-34 Nm (15-25 lb-ft).
