Leaking Water Separator

Howdy all, I just went and picked up my first full size ford pick up (1989 F-250 4x4 with a 7.3L non turbo) this is my first diesel as well. now having said all that let me explain my problem.

When i got this truck the water separator was leaking tons of diesel. The bottom metal piece that screws onto the filter was not tight at all. I replaced the filter tightened it up and it seemed to elimitate the leak.

However after the truck has been running a minute or two it starts leaking again. Except it isnt leaking from the bottom anymore. Now it is leaking from the top above the filter. There is a rectangle plug on top of the filter housing that has a black boot and looks like two wires. When I pull the plug off with the truck running I can see fuel bubbling up and coming out of it. Since I dont know what this is doing it doesnt look to me like fuel should be coming out of here.

Any advice would be appreicated.

the o-ring that's leaking ain't accessible from the outside of the filter/water separator. what ya gotta do is take the filter off and get a socket and unscrew the fuel warmer plate and THEN you can remove that plug out of the top of the filter housing. it's a pain in the a** to do but it's not completely undoable. there is an o-ring on the nut that you unscrew that will need replacing as well. be sure to use rings that are not affected by diesel fuel or you'll be doing the replacement again before you want to. if you do like me and booger up the rectangular piece on the top trying to get it off, you'll have a leak that has to be stopped up with j-b weld or something like that. may be more information than you wanted, but always better to have too much than too little. LOL

Also look carefully at the plastic near the connector and o-ring. If there are cracks, you'll probably have to replace the heater...or eliminate it (if you don't live in a cold place) by physically blocking the hole. Hope it's just o-rings...
