Driving to work on the highway @65 mph.
I am in my 07 FX2.
2 dumptrucks pass me and I saw it coming right at me.
It was a rock the size of a tennis ball.
BOOM, it hit my windshield and the hood.
Hood is dented, paint is scratched right down to bare steel.
Windshield has 3 small chips.
Body shop estimate is $912.00 with new windshield.
Has any one had chips fixed?
I dont want to change the windshield.

You'd be better off to use touch up paint and do it yourself. Chances are you are going to get lots of dings and paint chips especially if you drive the interstate a lot in the summer.
I don't know about your state, but in many states the company or driver of the truck is responsible for their load and subsequently the damage to your vehicle when things like this happen. I'd have followed the truck to find out the pertinent info and called the Highway patrol.
Dang, that sucks...sounds like luck I would have. I had a couple of different co-workers have chips / small cracks in their windshield fixed. Guy came on site and did it in the parking lot. The repair was virtually invisible unless you knew exactly where to look and could 'line up' some object between your eye and the repair to see a very slight optical distortion. But in a day or two, they forgot it ever happened and the windshield was like normal. One word of caution is to get it fixed ASAP! The thermal cycling this time of year (hot sunny day, cool night, air conditioner, etc) can pop a crack out of the chip. If it cracks very big at all, then you are in for the full replacement.
As for the dump trucks...around here they are all labeled "Stay back 300 feet - not responsible for accidents" Of course, you have to be within 30 feet to read that, but you get the idea. I don't know the specifics of the law, but it would seem like the driver would be responsible for securing the load. Of course it may be water under the bridge if you can't find that specific truck, or don't want to spend days of time off work in small claims court.
Same here. Every insurance company I have ever dealt with replaces windshields for free if you have full coverage on your vehicle. They do it because its a safety issue.
my insurane company will fix chips/cracks for free as an alternative for a replacement windshield. i just had this happen a few weeks back. this is because the deductible would be more than the actual cost, so they do it as a courtesy to their people.
What do you pay for insurance? I have rarely if ever got anything for free from an insurance co. Usually paid for many, many times over in premiums,
In Florida its free. You do not have to pay a deductable or anything all you have to do is report it to your insurance and they will send the window man to fix your vehicle. Its some type of Florida law
it's not just Florida. I've done it in Georgia, South Carolina, Texas, Arkansas, and Washington.
Skeeter94 is right, it's covered under your comp coverage. Just be sure there is a windshield clause. My Geico has it, and when I had Allstate, they did too.
