driveshaft

I have a 2001 f350 automatic, 7.3 diesel. I have a knocking/vibration at all speeds under the floor boards. Only happens 60% of the time. It sure sounds like a ujoint but they all appear tight. I'm wondering if there is something in the transfer case that could be out of balance. It's getting worse so hopefully the dealer can find it. Its not over bumps, just on the straight road and lessens when I turn left or right. It's not in 4x4 and hubs not locked.
thanks

Sounds like maybe torque convertor or flywheel. My local tranny mechanic replaces a lot of them on the county ambulances. He said its odd they only seem to come in with the diesels with this problem. I guess more torque than gassers.

Might still be u-joints. One or more might be seizing up. If you undo the bolts retaining the one at the back, it the easiest one. Pop the u-joint from the yoke and rotate the caps of the two exposed ends. If there's a crunching feel or they don't turn. It might be time to replace. The joints on a SD are fairly snug. So you probably would never get any play unless they are completely gone. If you're going to change one, change them both and be done with for another 6 years. Might as well regrease the splines while your at it. Have fun...
