I have discovered another problem on my new-to-me early 99 CC 4x4 . Silly me never checked the 4 wheel drive thouroughly before buying the truck 3 months ago and may have gotten bitten . I used 4 wheel drive for the first time getting the travel trailer out of the driveway ( steep and gravel ) and noticed my left wheel hopping like mad(this occured on the transition to ashpalt ) when in 4 wheel drive and makeing a left turn . Now with my limited experience it seems the front differential is locked up causing possi traction on the front at all times . Now in the old days we used to weld spider gears on old 4x4 to get this on purpose but we didnt drive them on the road . Any ideas where to start without tearing the whole front end apart ?

When I have my hubs locked and in 4hi mine will hop when I turn hard either way on dry pavement. I don't believe that you have a problem it's just the nature of a straight axle front end.If you think someone put a locker or welded the spiders just jack it up get both front tires off the ground lock your hubs put the transfer case in 2hi and see if both front tires turn the same direction if they do some ones done something .

When you are in 4wd (high or low) the transfer case is locked, meaning that the front driveshaft and the rear drive shaft must turn at the same speed. This also means that the sum of the distances traveled by the front wheels has to be the same as the sum of the distances traveled by the rear wheels. When you are making a turn, this will not be the case, and something will have to give.
In my experience with 4wd's, what will happen is exactly what you are seeing. The wheel with the least traction is going to let go, in order to equalize everything. Totally normal.
