93 standard cab 302, auto transmission (think it is the E4OD), 2wd.
Recently I noticed a noise that I think is coming from my transmission. It sounds like something metal that is hitting something that is rotating. If you could imagine sticking a piece of metal in a fan while it is running, that is what it sounds like. I checked underneath for any signs of something rubbing, and found nothing. Now, what makes me think it is the transmission is that it only occurs from 1400 RPM to 1600 RPM. And it only occurs when the tranny is in drive. Does not occur in neutral, 2nd gear, or 1st gear. Transmission fluid level is where it should be, and was changed about 30,000 miles ago. Short of an internal transmission issue, I have no idea what it could be. I have noticed no driveability issues. Any idea what to look for?
I am having a noise problem under my truck myself, but my truck runs superbly. Find out if it's the drive shaft or universal joints? Mine may be going bad, so I was thinking that you may have the same problem, but I am not sure. Steve
I just took mine back to shop . Made it 520 miles Dang those E4od's . Well they fix for free. It was making same sound. I thought they had knocked a heat shield loose but by time I got home You could tell it was trans. I'll ask what it was.
Nope, I haven't figured it out yet. Like you, I have noticed no change in driveability, but mine makes the sound exactly around 1500 rpm, through all of the gears.
I am having the same problem with my 99 F250 SuperDuty V10. It sounds like metal scrapping against something. It is coming from where the transmission meets the engine. My step dad said its probably the torque conveter but hes doesnt really know for sure. Does anybody know what the problem is?
I'm having the same issue with my 91 2wd after a motor swap. I suspect it might be the torque converter. It only happens when slowing down and while stopped in drive. Noise goes away when in park or driving. Something to do w/ fluid making its way back into the torque converter??? I confess knowing nothing about automatic trannies.
You all may be right about the TC...But have you considered a harmonic issue? Sometimes that sweet spot can be met and anything loose would rattle..It's just hard to beleive that with a tranny like the E4OD, especially how complex it is, that it would run good and strong just as it's about to come apart....I would get it on a lift and check every nut and bolt, especially motor mounts/crossmembers. I thought my tranny was going bad until I found a loose driverside motor mount...Now the noise is gone and the vibration is gone... Good luck....I have a different rattle now from the rear end...I know the pain of chasing a "rattle".....My $.02....
Just wanted to add my truck in too. My 1994 F150 L6, 4.9L 2WD makes a strange noise that only lasts about 5-7 seconds, when I put the truck in drive and pull off (after the truck gets rolling) maybe about 20 mph the noise goes away. I don't have a rpm gauge so I don't know the rev's. The sound is similar to what was describes in the other responses on this thread, and it radiates through the truck. A sound like this: Like the word rail, but it's RAAAAIIIIILLLLLLLLLLLLLL! (for about 5-7 sec. like I said, then it stops)
I have been pulling heavy loads on a trailer with my truck (dirt, sand, rocks); I thought maybe I strained something in the tranny, or a linkage of some sort.
I have a 91F-150 W/5L (250K miles) and E40D tranny (100K miles), the noise on mine happens when truck first rolls off or when decelerating just before stopping, especially after truck has sat a day or longer. Sometimes it will make sound when shifting into overdrive. Trans. mech. said it may be u-joints so I replaced them (no change). Was also told to check flywheel to torque converter bolts (they were tight). Next I checked exhaust system and sheet metal and everything was tight. It sounds like it is comming from trans. area. Even though not driving any different could it possibly be a torque converter issue?
my truck makes the same noise. it sounds horrible but it drives fine. only when i take off from a stop can i hear it, once it shifts to 2nd it goes away. i drained my fluid and found metal shavings and a nice metal sliver about the size of a toothpick. if anyone finds out what it is please reply to this thread. i'd rather not drop a grand on a new tranny if i dont have to.
Well, I solved mine. Was changing my oil this weekend, and I decided to tighten all of the bolts around the tranny while I was under there. They were all tight, but I snugged them down. I also took off the heat shield on the cat, since one of the bolts was rusted through. Viola! Noise is gone. It's reallyh odd to, because I could drive at 1500 rpm with the tranny set in 2nd gear and there would be no noise, but if it was in D there would be a noise. Odd.
But while I was under there I noticed PS fluid dripping from where the Pitman arm is.
*sigh*
The cover on the cat is a common problem . I bolt them back on . Mines tight and still have the rattle at different speeds. But I would check all guards the ones on exhaust make this sound to.
Mine is definitely not a loose bolt or heat shield. Sounds just like a valve tap and only happens in drive or reverse when car is stopped. I keep going back to the torque converter... Any new ideas?
