drive train swape for 66 f100 what years ford pickups would be a eazy swap it now has a 351 winsor with a 3 speed trans and I would like it to stay a 351 but with a auto.
n498cdf, Welcome to FTE, The nations truckstop for 61-66 tech support.
The 351W was not used in pickups until the 80s, so your's has to be a transplant. Finding an auto and installing it behind the W should be pretty simple. I would suggest looking at an AOD with the price of gas going where it is. A new length of driveshaft probably is part of the picture as well.
When you do it, you will have to swap the steering column so a power steering/disc brake upgrade at the same time would make a lot of sense.

my 66 has a 69 351 in it I want to upgrade to a later year 351 as some parts are hard to find on early 351. I already have power disks brakes. I am going to change sterring col, becouse I want to keep the shifting on it. would the aod require much electronic stuff to make it work or would the c4 or c-6 be better?
There are 3 stages of AODs that bolt up to the 351W pattern.
The better choice IMHO would be one from 87 thru 92, or 2nd generation AODs. They do req' a little electronics hook up as they use a locking T/C and depending on the year & model of the donor may have an electronic speed sensor requiring R&R before you can connect your cable set up to it to use your current "Speed-0-Meter".
But it's not "Rocket Surgery" nor astro-physics in any case.
The only electrical hook up on an AOD is the neutral safety switch and the reverse lights. The lockup is done all inside the tranny. A regular speedometer cable fits in place of the VSS (if equipped). I have a 92 AOD in my 51 and I'm using a 78 F-250 speedo cable.
