Red face straight 6 problem deciding which Flowmaster Muffler

I have a straight 6 and I need to make a decision quickly about making the slight upgrade (new cat-back system) that I want for my truck. I have talked to a number of people including those at Flowmaster and they have mentioned that a 40 series or 40 series Delta Flow might create a tin-like or buzzy sound. It sounds like there is no hope for those with a 6 who want a good sound closer to a v-8. Flowmaster suggested the 50 series or SUV muffler with the extra and elongated chamber to eliminate the unwanted irritating sounds that the straight 6 would produce. Is it the 50s Delta Flow or the 50s SUV muffler I can't recall. I would like something besides a replacement stock exhaust. I guess you can't acheive a deeper, aggressive sound with a straight 6? I am new at this!

I am just getting ready to do exhaust on my 300 also. I talked to an exhaust shop today (that did my 351 and it sounded great), and he first said you will never get the motor to sound like a V 8, its just not possible. But, he recommended a 40 series flowmaster....but, not dual out, only single. He said the single pipe coming out gives it a more throatier sound, which is what i (and seems like you too) want.

I am going to put on a 40 series, and run the exhaust out the side right before the back tire...I am doing this early next week so i can let you know how it sounds when its done....

Do you know happen to know what kind of 40 series muffler is recommended? It is getting confusing! I definately know that I want single side out, I want to keep it kinda old school anyway. Thanks for the advice.

Not too sure, just flowmaster 40 series. Do you mean diameters and such? I didn't know there were different kinds of 40's.

40 series

Maybe I am just confused but it seems as if there is an American Thunder original 40, Super 40 and 40 series Delta Flow. Originally I was considering the Delta Flow because of the slightly quieter inside and louder outside thing...but if I only have the straight 6, single side out and not duals...would that be like compensation?

I don't know what to choose or what the hell I am talking about anyway. Flowmaster folks were the ones rec. the 50s series but I will have to ask them if it was the Delta Flow or the 50s SUV one. In any event, I am taking my truck in to my guy tomorrow morning and I guess I will be forced to make a decision then!

My advice...look into STAINLESS WORKS. They can make anything exhaust related, meaning that you are not limited to any kind of catalog. On top of that, the price is comperable and the quality is FAR SUPERIOR because it is all 304 stainless in and out which is much better than the aluminized that Flowmaster uses. What ever you want, Stainless Works should be able to set you up.

thanks for the advice!

My car guy basically just told me that my truck was not worthy of any sort of "performance exhaust" so I am discouraged. I have to find more of a truck enthusiast that actually wants to do the work, instead of these "strictly used as a work truck" folk! Come on!

any motor will benefit from exhaust upgrades, the extent of that benefit varies by application, but there's no reason not to upgrade at all. i've got factory exhaust on my 300 with cheapo turbo muffler with single exit in front of pass. rear tire. when i tear down motor i will have a header, still going to keep cat. single into muffler, then dual tips out in front of tire. haven't decided which muffler yet, i'd like to get gibson truck muffler, but they are expensive. do as much research as you can, i don't think you want your truck to sound like a rice burner with coffee can muffler. (like a swarm of giant mosquitos). it will never sound like a v8 but it can sound throaty with a little rumble.

i couldn't answer that, it's more cause it's a 6cyl vs 8cyl. even a v6 with duals sounds funny going down the road to me.

i might have a good answer to the whole why 6s and 8s sound different. its all in in the order the pistons fire, the way the valve opens, and how many cylinders are firing, if you got 6 cylinder there 2 less cylinders thus making it a little buzzier soundin than a v8 cause there is less pressure comin through the exhaust, there is more pressure flowing therough a v8s exhausttheres lots and lots of things that contributre to the sound, im more a muscle car guy than a truck guy, and i love goin to the local cruise nights and hearin different restored cars with stock style exhaust and listenin to the difference in sounds so far ive found dodges, chevys and fords to all have different sounds unmodified, i believe that to be linked to the factors above, that is my theory, by the way i think the 300 i6 sounds copletly awsome with a 40 series, sounds alittle like a detroit diesel under hrd accel

Thumbs up

Thanks! I am starting to feel more convinced about the 40. Could you describe the sound the best you can? Does it sound riceburnerish? I am definately down with the diesel sound but would a i6 sound like that? I still think anything would sound better then the silent stock exhaust. Will it make a difference if I stick with the single side out? That is what I would like to stay with.

To be honest with you, i dont think it is posible to make a I6 or any other ford for that matter sound ricey. Go with the 40 series. You wont be disappointed.
