I have a 1993 explorer with a A4Ld and I have a chance to get 1994 explorer, is this a straight swap or I thought that I read somewhere they changed something mid 1993 on the a4ld. If there is, can someone please tell me how to tell. My 1993 has no overdrive
Thanks
Any changes that would have been made mid-'93 would have been purely internal and wouldn't effect the interchangeability of the two. Over the years, they made several internal adjustments to strengthen the A4LD internals. So a '94 A4LD will fit just fine in your '93.
The main question I have is, how do you know that changing the transmission is going to fix your overdrive (4th gear)? 3-4 shift on an A4LD is electronically controlled. If all other shifts are working (1-2, 2-3), then there's a good possibility that the fault lies in an EEC-IV sensor (TPS, VSS, etc.) or a bad connection in the 3-4 shift solenoid circuit. Replacing the transmission won't usually fix those kinds of faults.
I had in to a transmission shop and asked them to check the problem particular the 3-4 shift solenoid, they said it was the bands or something. But that was 2 1/2 years ago and the transmission still works fine except no overdrive.
Thanks
