I'm interested in the benfits of using a performance cold air intake kit for my 97 F-150 Lariat, 4.6L Triton, and I was wondering in anyone here knew of a really good brand or model that I could look into. Thanks.
Hi Flow,
I recently installad a DJ Motorsports Air Intake With K&N Filtercharger on my 4.6L Triton. Also a Poweraid Throttlebody Spacer. I'm quite pleased with the performance but you can expect a whistling noise from the intake at certain accelerations. I believe you will get that on any open system. The noise is not that big of a deal. Just takes alittle getting used to. You dang sure know it when you stick your foot into it. Will change the sound of your motor also. Especially if you have a performance exhaust..like Flowmaster. See picture of my system in my gallery.
Good Luck,
Does it get that loud agressive sound? I want to get my truck outfitted with a lot of performance stuff, and I'm starting with the smallest parts first. My friend only added a K&N to his truck, and it did a lot for the sound and how it runs, I'm trying to imagine what a whole intake kit will do. Why not get the whole K&N intake kit? And what kind of whistling do you mean, I mean is it really embarassing whistling or just...I dunno, please explain. Thanks.
The entire intake kit that I want to use is the Volant one. I don't want a filter to be out in the open, because my stock intake has a cover around the filter, and to me, it seems that the way it is, it will not get as dirty as one in the open would get. But that's just me, please tell me if I'm wrong here. Thanks.
Did not see the intake you were looking at. Link is no good. As for a closed system.. I imagine it will not have a whistling noise when you put your foot in it. But I don't think you will have the power that an open system gives you. The noise I spoke of is a slight whistling noise caused by rushing air through the intake. I don't see it as embarrasing. Anyone that knows performance will recognize that sound. The average schmoe will probabally not hear it at all.
And yes..the open system will sound more aggressive. Sounds like a Holly 4 barrel when you get on it. Don't think you will get that with a closed system. If you decide NOT to go with an open system..just buy a K&N filter to fit your stock air intake. No sence in buying some fancy looking system thats basicly the same thing you already have.(Closed system) Thats my "non-professional" oppinion. And as for the open system getting more dirty.... Well I felt the same way. But from what I have read about K&N filters..it works better than you think. The system I have says I wont have to clean it until I have 50,000 miles on it. (Unless I plan on racing Baja..LOL)
Want aggressive?...get a Flowmaster American Thunder duel exhaust. Sweet but not rattling like some. A good mellow tone..untill you get on it.
Hi I do not know if you have resolved this or not, but go to performancecombos.com the have combos with dual exaust, intakes, headers and chips for your truck. I have a 97 4x4 with the 4.6. I bought a combo from them with a gibson exaust, a jet stage 2 chip and airforce one air intake. It was $8?? and it was worth evey cent, It all came stagered because their was a shipping problem at the time, so I got to put the products on in the order of the Intake chip and then exaust, you could feel a large differance with each addition, The intake really sucks in the air to you can hear it, it make the soound a good 4 barrel used to, The also offer a kn intake but the technician I talked to recomended the airforce one instead, It also looks better. They have a site also. Airforceone.com
Good luck post you results when you figure out what you are going to do post it and let us know
