Have a line on a 2005 F350 4WD 6.0 Power Stroke with 25K on it. Want to use it to pull 24-foot RV and light boat trailer in a train. Need better mileage than my '96 F250 460 V8 with 4.10 rear end.
The 2005 has 3.73 rear end... What's the opinion on this vehicle...I know the 6.0 has had a checkered reputation, particularly back in 2003...???
Please let me know what I'm getting into with a vehicle like this.
I have an '05 f350 6.0 with 45k that i have owned since new. Runs like a dream and i have not had any problems. I tow a 20 foot trailer with my jeep on it and a camper on the back of the truck and the truck will pull the passes at 75 mph without any hesitation.
I have modified it a bit. I run an edge programmer, banks 4" exhaust, and a AEF stage three cold air intake. I get betweem 18 and 20 MPG when running empty and about 13 to 14 MPG when loaded. I wouldn't trade my truck for anything.
I have friends that have had problems with 03 and 04 6.0Ls, but noone i know has had major problems with the '05 and newer 6.0L. I sure there are some that have ahd problems, but that has been my experience. Hope this helps.
My last truck was a '95 F-250 with the 460 engine. The current truck is an '06 F-350 PSD with 3.73 gears.
There is a world of difference between my old 460 and this F-350 PSD. I routinely pull a tractor and trailer which weigh on the heavy side of 10K. The '06 pulls this like a dream where the 460 had to work hard especially when pulling up steep hills.
There is a turbo lag on the '06 when starting from a dead stop and then power comes on very strong. Once you get used to how the diesel works, this is no big deal. Mileage is much better with the diesel than with the thirsty 460. Figure about 6 MPG for the 460 and 12 MPG for the diesel - this depends on many factors, but the difference is real.
The integrated tow controller is a *must have* if you plan to do much towing.
Dan most of the problems with the 6.0 were the early models back in 03/04. Even then the problems only seem to hit @50% of the owners. I have an early 03 F250 crew with the 6.0 with 43k on it...and no problems with the motor or tranny. I'd say if you get it at a good price, go for it!
