Cam a 300 or swap in a 351?
Here is how I use the truck. I have a 4000 lb boat and a 6000 lb travel trailer that I pull with it. I use it as a daily driver never going over 100 km/h (65 mph). I don't wheel it hard but use it to crawl through the bush during hunting season and pull out trees for firewood. I take it on the odd trip over 2000+ kms.
It is a 96 F150 4x4. It has the stock D44 TTB and stock 8.8. It has 4.56 gears with open carriers front and rear, the M5OD tranny, and 35's. I am also wondering if the drivetrain can handle the 351. From some guys I have talked to they say that it can.
I need some more gusto when pulling and general highway driving and am wondering if the cam will do this for me, as I am sure that the 351 will.
Thanks for all the help.
You'd still get *deacent* gas mileage (especially better than the 351). You won't have as much power with the 300, but it will be alot less work....that is, unless you carb the 351.
I have an 88 bronco, and when I rebuild it I plan on putting a carb on it, not just for the cost, but alot less headache since I plan on doing some headwork and adding a good cam to it.
I've always heard, though, that the M5OD is only rated for 300 Lb.ft of torque, and a stock 351 is putting out 317 (at least my 88 bronco does). So I don't know how well it will hold up. Make sure to let us know how it's going!

Didn't the SC only have a 2.3L's? if so, it was only an M5OD R1 (the same thing they put in the rangers), it's a smaller verson that isn't as strong as the R2, which is in the fullsize trucks and bronco's. Never heard of them holding that much torque.
They aren't a heavy duty tranny...The ZF5's are only rated at 420-470 pound feet of torque, and the M5OD was never put behind a 351 from the factory, which has only 317 pound feet of torque.
