I have 75 f100. My rings are going bad. Don't know how long I can milk this engine till I get a new one. Need help deciding on how to replace it. Go to a junck yard, buy a rebuild w/ or w/o warenty? Need to know what kind of questions to ask and what to look for.
If this needs to go into the engine forum I'll move it. I thought I would try here first.
junkyard or hit up the local boards, I would just grab a 302 out of a stang or lincloln lsc get you a roller cam motor and just swap over your intake and change out your dist. drive gear to mesh with the roller cam gear. You should be able to grab one in good shape for a few hundred dollars.
I just drive the truck to work and carry small loads occasionaly. I'm not looking for tons of hp. I'm wanting to keep it stock for the most part. Any suggestions on where to buy a rebuilt w/ a warrenty?
What will roller cams do for me? How much hp does a 351w have over a 302?
For $2k you should be able to get a good crate engine. They usually come with 3 year 36k mile warranties. Do you plan on swaping the engines yourself or does the $2k include paying someone to do it?
Personally I would search the local classifieds first and see if someone has a good one thats been redone. Nothing fancy but a good rebuild with receipts. Usually you dont find those deals when you need them. My second choice would be to find one you can hear run and maybe even test drive and if it sounds good either use it as it is or take it to a good machine shop and have them give it a good overhaul. Ive got a good shop that I take my stuff to and I trust them better than an assembly line remanufacturer BUT I dont get the 3 year 36k mile warranty.
