King pin installation

How tight is OK when replacing OEM 1951 F1 (or any other, for that matter) stock axle kingpins? I just got mine back from the shop, and I can turn one side by moving the axle stub, with one hand. The other one takes two hands, firmly. The shop guy said this one was OK, it would loosen up fine. This vehicle doesn't have power steering.

Hmmm... sounds to tight to me. Did they shim it for you? Buddy and I just did his and we put shims in till it was just tight with no play, I don't think you should have to use two hands to move the spindle. I would recheck it personally. Note, be careful with the shims they bend very easy and they are very very sharp ask me how I know.

The real test is, can you get grease in there? If you can't get them lubed, they'll seize up sooner or later. By that time, they'll have rusted in so solidly that getting the kingpins out will require large quantities of profanity, a very large hammer, and possibly choosing between saving the spindles or axle.

If they accept lubing, put the tire/rim on and see how they turn (jacked up). If they turn smoothly pushing and pulling by hand on the outside edges of the tire, then I don't think you will have a problem. The best I remember mine were a little stiff in the beginning. They will loosen up.
