I recently purchased a 1983 Ford Bronco XLT. Its a 5.0/Auto mostly stock condition. I bought it pretty cheap because the timing chain slipped. I figured while I have the front of the engine apart I might as well do a little preventive maintance, and go ahead and change the oil pump and pan gaskets. So whats the secret in removing the oil pan. I read in a repair manual that you don't have to jack the motor up. But it looks like I am going to have to do it. If anybody knows of an easier way, I would appreciate it.
If you haven't yet. reach in when the pan is droped and take off the oil pump. It has two bolts and it is a pain and messy. I've had to do this with my 79 f250 and think it is the same. I've had three fords and I do like them but the don't make things easy. Good Luck
I don't know which manual you read but to drop the oil pan on a TTB front end you must lift the engine.
The way I swapped my oil pan gasket was to loosen the tranny mount, but do not remove the bolts only loosen them, I did this to prevent binding, you may not need to do this.
I used a engine hoist to lift the engine, other have used floor jacks but lifting by the harmonic balancer is NOT recommended
Once the engine is up slide a 4x4 or 2 2x4s on the motor mounts, as the most I could get the engine up was 4" before the trannys bell housing (c-6) contacted the body.
Rest the Engine on the blocks
You may have to relocated the exhaust crossover pipe from the manifold. On the 351W I cut and removed it for the job.
Remove pan Bolts, Pan will rest on the TTB frame member, reach in and unbolt the oil pump and drop it into the pan. with the pump out of the way you can now slide the pan out and replace the pan gasket.
