I have a 2001 4.0 4x4 Off Road Package and was wondering what the difference is between this truck and the Edge package besides the cosmetics. I'm trying to go to coil overs, yet I can't use a coil over kit because I have pulse vaccum hubs. Yet with the Edge package the kit will work, so how does their 4x4 system work?
I'm a little confused, because the pulse vacuum hubs went away before 2000, so you should not have them in 2001. The front suspension starting in 1998 on 4x4's is a torsion bar setup, not coils.
The Edge package is just cosmetics - the body colored fender flares and bumpers. The Off-Road package in '01 included skid plates and slightly better shocks than the standard trucks.
I know the FX4 has electronic locking hubs because the 4x4 selector is on the floor, where as mine is on the dash. I found a kit to go to coil overs that will accept the pulse vaccum hubs, yet they are around $5k.
Be very careful about making blanket statements like that. Things can change dramatically from year to year. For instance, my 2004 FX4 has NO locking hubs at all. The wheels always turn the driveshaft. So you need to specify what year & model you're talking about...

That is actually incorrect - the transfer case shift is manual on the FX4, rather than electric on the 'regular' 4x4s, but there is no lock/unlock on the hubs on the Rangers from at least 2000 on.
I have a 2003 FX4 and it has a electric dash mounted shift control. I bought it new and all the 03 FX4's I looked at were this way, to get a manual shift I would have to take a FX4 Level 2 with a manual tranny.
Sorry I wasn't clear - the '03-'05 FX4 Level II has the manual shifter for the t-case, but the 'regular' FX4 has the electric shift. In 02 there wasn't a Level II, and i believe all FX4's had the manual shift t-case.

Actually the electronic shift transfer case was the only available option after 2003 on any Ranger. 04 didn't have the option of the manual trans case shifter anymore. My 04 is electric shift **** on the dash cuz thats the only way they came after 03.
In 2002 the FX4 package was the same as current Level II trucks, in 03 they divided the package up. The FX4 was the same as the 4x4 Off Road and the FX4 Level II became the new trim name of the original FX4.
I didn't mean to stir anybody up... I found a long travel kit for pulse vaccum models. The downside its 5k... So I can go to coilovers after all. If the **** is on the dash, does that always mean its pulse vaccum though? Do you have to stop to engage the front diff if you have a **** on the dash?

Hmm, I've seen '04 FX4 Level II w/ the manual t-case shift, so apparently they didn't make them all the same - my sources say it was in 06 when they changed to all electric shift...
I saw an '03 today Level II with a manual t-case. I talked to another guy that he has a 2000 1/2 Ranger and used the RCD lift kit, which was the kit I was going to in the first place. He said the kit worked fine on his truck. Is there anyway I really can figure out what hubs I have on this truck at all?

Sorry to argue ruby but I know for a fact that if you saw an actual model year 2004 with a manual T-case it was converted. I was a Ford Master Certified salesman in 04 and I know that the manual T-case was not offered.

Take a picture of the hubs and post them on here so we can look. But if memory serves me right....you shouldn't even have hubs.

So Level2, can you tell me how close my 99 4x4 with Off-Road is to a Level II (forgetting the engine size and the creature comforts)? And I just replaced all shocks to Bilsteins!....OE for the new Level IIs. How different is the original Off-Road package from the new Level II. Thanks, Pat
