I bought a 76 F150 from the original owner. It originally had a 390 and he was talked into swapping it out for a 302 not long before I bought it. There were several "mix-matches" that weren't exactly right. Some of them I was able to replace or fix others have been a challenge.
One that I haven't found a good solution for is the rigged shift rod. For some reason the one on the truck is too short and an extra piece from another shift rod was bolted to the end near the transmission. While it is functional it still lacks the ability to be adjusted just right.
Is there a way for me to find the "right" shift rod for this swap or do I need to rig this piece further to make it as I need it?
I think I have seen replacement shift linkage rods on some of the sponsors here. You shoudl just have to get the one for your 302 and that transmission..right?

That's what I am hoping. I've looked but haven't found any. Maybe I'm just blind.

ALL 1973/76 F Series 2WD trucks 6 or V8, regardless of what auto trans they have, use the exact same shift rod:D3TZ-7326-A ~ 18 21/32" long, 7/16" diameter. Whatever your truck has now, is not an original rod, and has been rigged to work.
Thanks. That's what I needed to know. Now to find out what I have and how to get what I need. I don't understand why the shift rod would have been an issue with the 390 to 302 motor swap.

It wasn't because they're the same. What prolly happened is the rod was broken, or damaged, or ended up missing. Someone found one that was close, and jury rigged it, as you have found out. These trucks are 30 years old, so who knows what some PO did.
Found the number on the rod I have, or most of it -
D3?A - 7326 - KA Any idea what this came from? (The ? looks like a straight line - 1, L, I - not a T)
It is almost 20 inches long and still not long enough without the "addition". At present, it's 20.5 inches from shift lever center to transmission lever connection.

Something is not right, as the original is 18 1/2" long and is the same exact one one used for all auto trans' from 1973/76 as I already posted.
The longest one used is the one from 1978/79 F Series and used on ALL the autos, regardless of engine size. It is 19.16" long.

The only thing I can figure is when they did the swap everything got pushed back a couple of inches. I found a factory 302 77 f150 at the salvage yard and it had the exact shift rod as I have and as you described. Guess I'll cut, weld and grind to make a "correct" fitting rod. You just never know what you'll run into with these old trucks. Thanks again for the info.
I appreciate the offer but already had the machine shop cut and weld 2" of 7/16 bar to the rod. I won't win any awards but it is very functional.
What was this rod out of? NumberDummy posted the numbers and the longest used was 19.16" on the trucks. Could it have come from a car? I'm still trying to understand why mine seems to be the red-headed stepchild. Wonder if the shift lever at the tranny may be shorter?
