Rear Drive Shaft

I'm getting ready to replace the u-joints in the rear drive shaft of my daughter's 88. The u-bolts holding the shaft to the rear of the trans. have what looks like torx nuts. I have a set of torx sockets but none of them would fit. I also have a good assortment of Craftsman American and metric box ends. Any suggestions on what to use for removal?

201, I believe the bolt is a 5/16 12 point. You need a small 12 point box end. I use one from a Craftsman ignition set, just put it on the bolt head, and give it a "small" rap with a hammer. Be sure and use a little lok-tite upon reassembly. I also use lok-tite on the bearing saddles to prevent u-joints from spinning (on the CV joint end). Good luck. Don

Although a 12 point fits the u-bolt, seems it'll round off easier than a hex head...so be careful...

Thanks for the info. I didn't have the socket but I did have a 12 point box end that did the job, slowly, just fine thank you.
Since I didn't have the time I took the vehicle to Midas and told them to go ahead and replace all three u-joints. They called later to tell me that the u-joints were fine. The problem was this small yolk that resides inside the double cardan joint. I replaced it and the u-joint I had to press out.
They main reason for my reply is to compliment the Midas shop here in Hot Springs, Arkansas. They could have gone ahead and replaced the u-joints and told me about the defective yolk that would have to be replaced later since the part has been discontinued by Ford and was available only through a drive train specialist retailer.
