Cooling system question?
Hey Guys...
Being new to the PSD I had a question about antifreeze... I come from the IDI world where running the right antifreeze in VERY important....
I was looking at my antifreeze, and it looks to be original ( 2002 ) and the frod extended life antifreeze. When I flush it can I go with regular green antifreeze? or is it important to run the gold coloured stuff???
Secondly, just as with the IDI is it important to run a ford or IH thermostat??? not an aftermarket??

yes you can swap to green just make sure you get all the gold out of the system..the 2 blending is not a good thing...you need to use a ford thermostat..IH is different..you can use a 203 stat from http://www.dieselsite.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=186 id also get this too http://www.dieselsite.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=188

Why would you want to switch to the green stuff? I thought the gold stuff was the ticket because you don't have to mess with additives and test strips. Is there something wrong with using the gold stuff I'm not aware of? Not trying to knock you, just wondering because I have two trucks in need of a coolant change pretty soon.

hmmm.... any more input????? I have one yes and one no.... Doesn't ford run the gold antifreeze in both gas and diesels???
if switching to green its still smart to run the antifreeze additive like in the IDIs??

If you run green you HAVE to do the test and keep additives at proper levels. If you want trouble free look into the RED HD ELC's (not the normal orange ELC's) ie, Shell Rotella HD ELC, Final Charge HD ELC that meet CAT EC-1 specs. http://www.finalcharge.com/finalcharge5050.html

The TELC in aklim's link is described as rasberry red, that is HD ELC
The dexcool (orange) is what you dont want
