I recently picked up a 96 F150 4x2 with the 300 six/ 5 speed. The exhaust is getting pretty punky and the tailpipe is partially kinked shut. I was thinking about cutting the second cat off and running a straight pipe (2.25" or 2.5") with no muffler through a new stock tailpipe with a 3.5"x15" tip at the end? I am after the nonturbo diesel sound, do you guys think it would sound any good?
Being it's a daily driver I can't have it too loud. I would like to get some sound out of it without sounding trashy and raspy. I want it to sound like one of the early 90s Dodge trucks with the Cummins I6 diesel...minus the turbo whistle obviously. Any other opinions?
I wouldn't cut off the second cat, the computer will go nuts. Also you'll never pass emissions tests with it that way. You could replace both with a single high-flow three stage unit. I'd just cut the existing system off right behind the second cat and go with a pipe from there. It's going to be louder than you think.
I don't think my 96 has downstream o2 sensors after the last cat I should be able to cut the last one off I would think. 300 sixes don't get very loud unless you have a header on it with no pipes, I tried that once with my 84... mmm sounded wicked! When it had a regular manifold it wasn't loud at all. I don't have to worry about emissions in Michigan, I will have one cat on there still.
Yes, but that first cat is only a two stage unit. You need the second cat. I've had two trucks with pipes from the second cat back (one was an '88 E150 with a 302 and the other was a '92 E150 with a 351) the 302 sounds really good, the 351w was just LOUD. I would think that the six will sound good.
Hmm that's good to know about the cats and all. I was figuring I could get away with it because a lot of people cut the 2nd cat off and supposedly have no problems. I am going to try the straight pipe, if it's too loud I do have a FM 40 series laying around I can throw on there to quiet things down a bit.
I have a 1993 F-150 with a 300-6 what i did is I previously took off the cats. and ran straight pipes (w/ glass packs)down the Pass. frame rail, put two 45's just infront of the pass. rear tire with some nice tipes. the only time it's loud is when you get on it. I sounds to me like a tractor(old Ford 8N) when driving
Uncle Ted! HELL YEAH! I am thinking of leaving the first cat... mainly for back pressure and running a single straight pipe out the pass. side in the stock location.
