Turbo Whistle

I have a 05 F-350 DRW CC. When I’m pulling my toy hauler, 11,000+ lbs, up on relatively steep incline I hear what sound like a computer fan spin up and then the turbo starts to make a high pitch whistling noise. The turbo boost will be at around or just above 30 PSI. This only happens when I’m pulling this much load. Does this happen to anyone else?

Jammer151,

First off welcome to FTE, lots of good people and info around here.

Okay, now for the noise, it is Not your turbo, it is the Viscous computer controlled Fan clutch locking up to draw more air through the radiator to help with cooling as the engine gets warmer. The PCM controlls the fan clutch and can lock and unlock it as need. And yes it is very loud when locked up.

Also if you have not done so yet, i suggest installing gauges, EGT, Trans Temp, Volts as a minimum so you can monitor these when you tow. The only gauges on your dash that are accurate are the fuel and boost gauges. The other gauges are glorified idiot lights.

Also drop down to the 6.0 section of the forum where there is alot more specific info on your truck, and resident diesel techs hangout there as well.

Hope this helps

Huh? Something new? Based on a discussion/debate I had a while back, I thought the 6.0's fan is a regular viscous clutch with a bimetalic coil to lock up the clutch when the air gets hot?

I was unaware the PCM controls it - is this true?

Yes it is true, the PCM controls the lock-up of the fan clutch. Look at the fan center and you will see a wire connected to it.

Okay found the link to the page in the 6.0L Bible showing the fan connected to the PCM

It is on Page 54

Here is the link to the 6.0 Tech manual in the "Tech folder" in the 6.0 section of the forum.
