I was trying to set the timing on my 86 Ranger with the 2.9L. All I could see on the harmonic balancer was T/C, and then there were a few marks then it had what looked like 1/2 then a few more marks and there was 20. My question is I know that it is supposed to be set at 10 degrees so would the 1/2 mark represent 10 degrees? I've just never seen it marked the way that is before on anything else.
My 2.9 is an '89, but I don't believe they changed it (much) in the intervening 3 years...
I have the T/C mark, which represents TDC, then 10 small degree marks, each one being 2 degrees with the last one being marked 20, followed by a 27 and a 33.
I would say that your 1/2 mark does indeed represent 10º so I would feel comfortable using that. Don't forget to pull the SPOUT connector before setting base timing.
What I did was to buy an adjustable timing light, where you dial in the amount of advance you want and then just line up the TDC mark. Removes the guesswork (plus, it gave me an excuse to buy an adjustable timing light, which I've always wanted!)
Also, it won't hurt to run the timing up to 12º -14º unless you're specifically setting it to factory specs.
Thanks a lot for the info, I just wanted to be sure so I didn't mess anything up. I'm going to need a new timing light as mine broke when I was using it. The plastic clip the goes over the spark plug wire broke so I guess that gives me a reason to buy one with the adjustable timing feature. Thanks again.
