Allright, whenever I drive over rough pavement the entire dashboard on my truck shakes up and down. Now I know it shouldn't do this, but don't know why it's doing it.
Is there supposed to be a bracket that attaches the center of the dash section to the firewall or should it be stiff enough not to bounce? I know the next generation of f-series had an issue with the side braces breaking and the same thing happening but don't know if something similar happens with the 80-86's.
Just need an idea of where to start looking before i start into it.
If the cab is as rusted as you say it is in your other post, I would suspect the whole cab is bouncing on the frame. Mine was doing this, and the door would rattle terribly. I found out the rear cab mount had rusted through the frame crossmember, and there was nothing supporting the cab. You can't really see it, unless you get a crow bar and pry up on the rear of the cab.
Its been a while since I've pulled one apart, but I remember there being a support made of about 1/2" steel rod that bolted to the firewall behind the heater duct, ran up and curved around to bolt to the bottom of the dash between the dash cluster and radio/heater bezel.
It'snot just the cap, it's the entire dashboard. I can watch the ashtray and radio bounce up and down as well.
I was told the bracket that holds the center speaker is also the main center dash support. I'm goign to get up under there in the next couple days, see if anything is broke around there.
