I can't see the timing mark on the harmonic balancer when trying to check the timing on my truck. I marked it with white chalk, but it is no where in sight. Timing light is on the #1 plug wire (I double checked). I moved the distributor in both directions and still couldn't see the mark. The spout connector was out. In fact, a few questions down I had asked about the spout connector. The small plug in the end of mine was missing and I just got curious as to what the timing might be set at. That is when I noticed I couldn't see the mark. Am I doing something wrong. This was my procedure: 1) climbed under the truck and located the slot on the harmonic balancer and marked it.
2) cranked the truck and brought it up to normal temp.
3) spout was already out (missing remember)
4) used inductive timing light on # 1 plug (first plug on the passenger side)
5) pointed the light at the mark. I could see the tab on the timing chain cover, but no corresponding mark on the balancer.
Is it possible the distributor could be 180 degress out? I put the light on the #8 wire also, but it didn't make any difference.
Any help/ideas appreciated.
The marks on balancers fad with rust clean it up and use paint /marker to fill lines (they are light when new. I took a chisel and put really small lines where the marks were.Good luck

Man you weren't kidding when you said the marks were light. They were barely visible even after scrubbing with a wire brush and a scrub pad. I finally found them though and got a good mark on it. Thanks for your help.
Sharkster if you see this, you've really got to scrape/scrub that balancer good to see those lines. They are cut mighty, mighty thin.
