I can't find any website to decode the VIN on my differentials! Does anybody know a site that has a Dana Differential Decoder. My truck is a 1977 Ford F-150 4x4 Regular Cab
Not picking at at straws here but the VIN is the vihicle ID number, and not the axle ID, but whatever.
This site has about everything you need, if you click on articles/spec at the top of your screen, you will find 'decoders' and that should have the Dana axle codes you are looking for.
If you run into trouble, and need further assistance, just post up the axle id number and your specific question, and someone will be by to answer.
Well I used the axle code from the plate. (H9J) I went to the decoder and it helped me nothing. I want to know what type of diffs I have for Ex: Dana 60, Dana 40

I wonder if the VIN rating plate is the original, you should verify the VIN with your registration. When 4WD is present, the 3rd digit gives the rear axle type and ratio and the type of steering the vehicle has. H9J is a 2WD code. Was the 4WD added? The first three digits of the VIN will verify whether it's an authentic 4WD.
H9 = Ford 9 inch / 4.11-1 / Limited Slip / 3700lb Rear Axle Capacity
I have found plates from these year trucks indicate how the truck was born, and not indicitave of any mods that may have been performed, I.E. gear changes. Possibly the cab was changed, and that would make everything different.
That 77' F-150 should have a D44 up fron, and a 9" out back.
Did they come any other way?
