Trying to change out ignition cylinder. But Chiltons says I have to remove top shroud as I have tilt steering. This is necessary to get access to unplug a 'key warning switch' before doing the exchange of cylinders. It looks challenging to get apart and back together fitting correctly as there are deeply recessed screws on the bottom shroud that holds it all together? Is this all necessary. Others have said they
simply did the exchange with the shroud untouched. Any help??
Most columns have a small hole in the lower shroud that allows you to insert a punch and push on the release pin with the key in the ON position and pull it out for replacement. However if the lock cylinder has failed and cant be moved to the ON position you will have to drill the tumblers out so it can be moved to ON to be removed. There are a few models that do require removing the column cover. If you have one of these you won't find the hole for the release pin.

if your model/yr does not have the pin..try his approach..and this is from a manual i found:
tilt strg.......
"disconnect the batty grnd..
remove the upper extension shroud by snapping shroud off from the retaining clip at the 9 o'clock position...
remove the trim shroud halves..
unplug wire connector at the key warning switch..
place shift lever in Park and turn key ON..
place a 1/8" wire pin (or bit) in the hole in the casting surrounding the lock cylinder & depress the retaining pin while pulling out the cylinder..
when istalling the new cyl, turn it to the run pos & depress the ret pin, then insert the lock cyl into the housing in the flange casting ..."
Aim, That's the exact instructions per Chiltons. So I must have to disconnect that switch since I have tilt steering. But there was no retaining clip, only screws on the bottom of the column. I'll try today to see if I can find the pin anyway.
