Need more info....was it blinking or steady? Did it come on at startup and stay on or did it come on why driving? What were the conditions? Loaded or towing?
My first impression is that there is an electrical problem somewhere.
Mine is doing the same thing, occasionally while towing. Either 2000# or 7000#, but it comes and goes as I turn the truck on and off. 10,000 miles on truck.
It did last winter with about 4000 miles on it. I went up to the dealership and told them the speedo was all over the place. I had not drove the truck in about a month and it sit's in an unheated garage. The dealer said that the speedo acting up is a common thing, no fix other than driving it more.
I had a similar problem, mine would come on only after driving on log trips – couple hours or more. I just replaced my rear VSS Part # 6L3Z9E731A $74.44. It hasn’t come on since but I haven’t taken a long trip since, so I’ll just wait and see. I talked to a tech (trying to schedule a time, but they were backed up) and he said that they rarely see the front ones go out, for what that’s worth. Its only a 10min job, the sensor sits right on top of the pumpkin you cant miss it. You only need a 10mm (I think) socket. You also might get away with only just cleaning it.

I have had a similar problem helping my buddy with his 99 f350 srw. He has replaced the VSS,( the old one looked fried) drained and cleaned the rear diff and for some reason his speedometer likes to sit at 40 mph or work fine?
Green Monster. I am in the same shoes as what you described. Mine has happened many times before, but this time I am out of warrenty. What did your friend figure out?
Have them check both VSS's. One is in your Tranny and there is one in the Rear Diff. I bought the one in the rear diff at AutoZone for 25$ or so and used a metric size wrench to replace mine. Done in about 15 min. the dealer was going to check both of mine and the cluster...for some ridiculous amount..
I got the trouble shooting from this very forum and it has saved me a lot of $ in mainteneace costs at the dealership!
Mine did the same thing on a trip with a trailer from Birmingham.
I ordered BRAB130 model sensor for the diff... turns out it is the wrong one for mine. I need a 6L3Z9E731-A according to the dealer and you can't get this one at auto zone. Dealer only. Yeah, it is a 10 mm bolt and easy to change. I hope it is this sensor ($85 dealer price) rather than the cluster (again).
I don't think the 6-speed manual has another speed sensor on it?
