Hello Everyone, I am looking to get some new tires for my '86 F-250 4x4. I use 4x4 rarely if at all, so, I need a tire that is good on the highway and generel driving. I sometimes carry substantial loads and often have mid sized loads. Loads range from 500 - 2300 lbs. I would like a tire that has rigid sidewalls like the Michelin's do. I tried some tires that had soft sidewalls and the truck was squirlly in handeling. Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
I like the Michelins but if there is something else to check out I would like to hear about it.
Thanks to everyone, as always.
P.S. Man Dave, I guess those pictures I keep seeing are the ones of your rebuild job. Very impressive. Nice Job!.
the main thing i would suggest is that you make sure that it's 10 ply rating on the tires, whatever you get, highway tread or mud or a/t. all the tire guys here have more or less told me that the weight of the diesel engine plus the 4X4 running gear tend to eat the front tires pretty quick on the lower ratings. thought that was just a sales pitch for higher priced tires, but it's only like $30 per tire or less between the 8 ply and the 10 ply. not sure this helps, but maybe so. can't remember the brand that i looked at --- seems like it was the same name tire that was failing on the expeditions and excursions from running under proper inflation. mounted and balanced it was about 680 to 720 a set of 4 depending on highway tread or a/t.

Thanks for the quick reply Speedrdr. That is just what I was talking about with the 10 ply rating on the sidewalls.
Can you use any 8 hole rims from Ford trucks on the older trucks? I have an offer to get the rims off an 01 Ford F-250 and was wondering if they have the same spacing. I guess the diameter could be different, if anything.
think there's some major differences in the bolt circle spacing between certain years. there was a thread a while back about this that posted the year models and the hole spacing for the 8 holes but i can't remember them. i'm sure somebody out here has the info handy and will post back soon.
superduty fords are the only 8 lug wheels that wont fit unfortunately. Unless you want to pay the coin for adapters, but then it makes more sense to buy rims to fit your truck.
99 and later trucks use metric spacing, 170mm - 8 - 16
97 and earlier trucks use, 6.5" - 8 - 16" wheels
The spacing is off just enough that the wheels will not fit.
The IFS front axle is hard on tires, rotate them often and keep the inflation up to get the best tire wear out of them.
Load range E ratings are usually only found on 235/85-16 tires.
Thanks for the compliment, that red and silver thing is my baby.

just remembered out of a deposition i just did. it was the firestone 10 ply highway tread that was the tire that gateway recommended OR the firestone A/T. of course, that was the main heavy truck tire that they carry here, so that might explain it. said there was no problem with sidewall failure if properly inflated and it wasn't the same ply rating and carcass as the ones on the excursion and expeditions that blew.
