I was getting a strange noice from my rear drivers side brakes so i figured that i needed to replace the pads, so i got some. I was going to put the pads on this weekend, noise started on thursday. Today i was on my way home to do my pads and i really loud noise and vibration happend and my truck stoped. i couldnt go forward, only back. so i got out and looked and my brakes and my rear pad was jamed in? i was able to pull it right out and it was warn down to nothing, and my rotor was all messed up. so i get a new rotor and intall the new rotor and new pads. Only the rear pad was warn though, the outter one was fine. My brakes are still rubbing though. Any thoughts? Im lost now. Maybe my calliper is junk?
I think your problem is a stuck caliper not the caliper its self but holder. It is desined to float on center of rotor to wear both sides even. The caliper is bolted to a bracket that has two floating pins with rubber boots. When doing brakes always pull out pins and grease with a high temp grease and put back in and make sure boots are in good condition to keep out dust. Most people over look this but brake dust can dry these out fast.
I just had the exact same problem about a month ago with my 2000 SD only the brake pad completely slipped out of the caliper. Ended up changing the caliper and rotor and the bracket due to one of the pins had frozen in the guide. Tried everything to remove the pin and finaly had to give in a buy a new bracket. Good Luck.
Does your rotor slide over your hub or is it one assembly? My son had the same issue with the brake. I am trying to find the correct rotor, but everyone shows a slide on style, but his looks like one piece.
When finally got it apart. We took a sand blaster and worked around the edges to remove the rust. That freed it up. Then cleaned it throughly in a solvent bath and repacked the bearings. Works great. We also had one of the pins frozen. Took forever to free it up. We cleaned it up and greased it so it slides again.
