I am trying to switch my 86 bronco with a 302 efi and aod, to carb. After asking people no one knows how to do it. I cant imagine it being that hard. What would you need to do it. New fuel pump, distributor, and wiring harness? I am also looking for a xmission shifter that bolts to the xmission to change the gears mine was broken on an engine and xmission rebuild.
You are going to have to do something with the gas tank. Doesn't
it have the electric fuel pump in it? I know it's going to have to much pressure. You only need around 5lbs.
Yeah it does have an electric fuel pump in the tank. But cant you take it out and put an inline one in it or put a fuel pressure regulater on it to step it down.
LAST EDITED ON 13-Mar-01 AT 11:07 PM (EST)[p]I did a 85 302 F250 EFI to carb conversion last summer. The new motor was a 300-6 that was already carbed so it was a little easier. Had to replace all fuel lines, remove high pressure pump and low pressure in-tank pumps. Rewiring the ignition, fuel pump relays, and rewiring the gas gauge (since the pump was removed), and a few other items required a better wiring diagram than Chiltons (got it from Alldata). A test light will be your best friend. In retrospect, it wasn't too difficult. Other folks here can speak to any other necessary changes to your existing engine.
I still have a complete 302 EFI with pumps that I can't seem to give away.

Why do you want to swap to a Carb setup? The EFI is truely superior.. I would leave it.
But it's easy enough to do.. Get a carb intake, carb, put it on.Your going to disregard ALOT of wiring. You might also want a better cam at the same time. To save time, and get better performance at the same time, I'd wire in an MSD setup, or you can use the ready-to run distributor from them. You only run 1 wire, and the ignition is good to go, with no sifting through miles of wire.
Find a way to get the fuel pressure down to 5-7psi, and your set.
I did this on a car a year ago. I am also going to do this on my Bronco as a quick fix until i can get the mass air flow because i'm making serious mods to the motor. How i overcame the fuel pressure problem was to join the out and return pipes together and using a T piece and made a line to the carb with a low pressure fuel regulator plumbed into it.It worked perfectly. good luck with your swap
