1. When i replaced my ignition module i set the timing a little bit more forward. And it would knock/ping every now and then. Then it would get worse so i would turn my distributor back. Now, i have no pickup and it stills pings. BAD. Upon accleration i can here it ping. Then when in overdrive at 45 and i barely touch the gas it pings. It has a new O2 sensor. Any ideas?
2. I hear a rattling from the rear when i have it in drive and the brake pressed. It goes away in neutral. And i cant hear it when outside the truck, only inside. What should i look at?
3. Does anyone know where i can get a pre-runner style replacement bumper. You know the tube type where it sticks out a little bit.
tom,
if i were you i,d set my timming where it should be and then i would check some other things.
check your carb and your intake, sometimes a vacuum can cause it to ping, also vacuum advance not working right.
your egr can cause pinging if it,s not right, plugs also can cause it.
i had that problem on my f250 460 engine, it was the vacuum advance. i replaced it set the timming on 8 degrees, and run middle grade or better fuel.
your noise while sitting in the truck could be the exaust ratteling, or a bad muffler. check it out.
good luck
After i posted the message i realized i was very vague on what kind of truck i have. Its an 89 Bronco 5.0 EFI. Its not carbed. Since its EFI anyone hints. And i have new exhaust from Midas (performance special). Its tight. Any other info would be appreciated.
Are you unplugging the spout connector when setting the timing? The computer has control over the timing unless you disconnect this temporarily to set the timing with a light. I wonder what would happen if you took the battery cable off for a minute and put it back on. The computer learns and makes minor adjustments to it's settings over time. If you make any changes to the engine I think it would be a good idea to take the battery cable off to erase this learning and let it re-learn everything. It may not make a difference but I think I would try it and see if it did.
I dont know what a spout connector is. Are you referring to the ignition module plug in? If so, yes I am. I am not setting the timing with a light. I am just turning the distributor to about where it should be. And i did try the battery disconnect idea to no luck. I am going to replace the spark plugs tomorrow. Could a faulty ignition coil do this? It also has new wires, cap, rotor and ignition module.
Well, replaced the plugs today. Autolite platinums. The olds one kind of had a whitish tint. Is this good or bad? And the pinging is still present. What's next to check?
You need to set your timing with a timing light. Put it back to facotry specs after disconnecting the spout connecter, and get back to us. You have no way of knowing where the timing is without a light. While you can set it by ear, that doesn't help at all when diagnosing it..
