I can't seem to get the reverse lights to work on my 1978 f250 Crew 4x4.
After fixing the frayed wiring and replacing the light bulb sockets, the lights work great from the green connector back. I've also replaced the neutral safety switch (c6) from a working truck and installed and adjusted it correctly. Obviously, the fuse was checked/changed. It is at this point I get lost. I'm getting 4-5v at the light sockets when I put it in reverse. I'm assuming I need to start chasing wires under the dash, but need to know what color wire(s) to be chasing. Everything else works pretty good. I HATE WIRING, and suck at it. Any help would be greatly appreciated...
try to jump the ground with a jumper wire. make a piece 2 feet long and put aligator clips on both sides. when you ground to the chassis scratch it in so you see bare metal. i built a jumper wire, and it is one of the most used tools (and cheapest) in my toolbox.
Thanks for the responses. I have scuffed up the grounds with sandpaper and they look good. When I put power to the black/red striped wire at the big green connector high up on the driver's side firewall the reverse lights work. Wouldn't that mean the grounds are good? Does anyone know the wire color/codes under the dash or should I continue checking the grounds? Thanks.
Pull the fuse and measure the power on the supply side.
Block the wheels, put it in reverse, and apply power on the load side of the fuse.
Whichever wire lines up with the blk/red wire on the connector is the wire to the fuse -- I'd guess it's also blk/red. The only wiring under the dash for the reverse lights should be from the fuse to that connector.
Check the operation of any components that share the fuse. Working properly or not, unplug or disconnect 'em, and check the lights again.
