Anybody know what the standard ride height should be on a 99 F250 LWB extra cab. I am having air bag problems and need to know if my rear leaf springs are shot. The air bags are the Ride Rites from Firestone. I have a Reese fifth wheel hitch and the problem is they bottom out unless I keep 20 psi or more in them, and that is unloaded. I don't think they are supposed to do that...
No, I don't have any overloads or sway bars. These air bags mount on the inside of the frame rail, on top of the axle. They are mounted through the bump stop hole on the frame. I have been looking since I wrote and the springs are pretty flat after looking at my friends truck. Guess I need to go shopping for some new leafs. The truck has a good many miles on it, probably time
Look real close and see if any of the leafs are broken/cracked. My guess is, if your springs are flat, then they need replaced. In 99 it seemed like just about every Ford Super Duty I saw had a different ride height, so I am not sure if you're going to be able to get any answers that way. Maybe go to a local spring shop and have them look at the springs?
I had a leaf break on mine, and I was able to pick up a new(er) set from a salvage yard. Maybe even consider a set with overloads. just remember to get the tabs to mount on the frame.
I have checked the springs over pretty good. No sign of broken leafs. The truck sits pretty level when I have low air in the bags. I didn't realize it was that low until I put the bags on. Apparently if your springs are not almost 100%, you can't use these bags. The bottom of the bumper is about 16" off the ground with no air and 18" with 20lbs. It is obvious now that the springs need replacing. As soon as I can find a set that's reasonable I'll be changing them. The issue with the air bags is still on my mind. If I put 25-30 lbs in the bags it lifts the truck so that the bottom of the bumper is about 20" off the ground. That gives the truck just under 5" of travel in the suspension. While unloaded that might be good, but with a 10,000 lb 5th wheel I am really doubting it.
