Hood Fit

I'm grateful for small victories, I've been screwing with this hood fit to the L/S Cowl for weeks and finally figured it out.

Looks good Jim. Do both sides stay down when you close it? What did you do to get it where you wanted it? Mine is a 49 but the issue with closure and fit should be the same.

Hood Fit

The hood linkage is basically fastened to the side of the cowl with three bolts arranged in a triangular fashion. The nuts on the bolts are accessed thru the inside of the cowl kick panel.
I found that to make the hood go down you had to rotate the bracket up in the front and down in the back. I loosened all three bolts, and raised the hood up until I could see the bracket rotate in the direction I wanted. To hold that position until I could tighten the nuts, I had to find a stick to prop the hood open in that same position. You may have to do several trys, I was lucky I guess, the first attempt made it look a 100% better. Be careful raising and lowering the hood while you're trying it out so you don't chip any paint. The pins on the linkage from the hood to the bracket are real sloppy, from wear I guess, but when I let it down, the rear of the hood sets down pretty good. I found that when you lower the hood almost closed and push it to the rear, it makes it sit down in the back better. I also learned the hard way that you don't slam this hood down to close it. The rubber bumper along the lower sides of the hood rest on the fender and it you close it hard, they'll dent the fender. Oh, well, more practice for removing dents. Both sides stay down very well, the right side was always better looking than the left, now they are the same.

I was just about to post the question "does anyone know the secret to hood alignment?".
You rock! I can't wait till tomorrow to work it out. I had the hood off when I put the new motor in and haven't been able to get it straight since! Thanks,
Doug

One side at a time, don't loosen bolts on both sides of the hood, or you'll get "lost" and lose control. I also found that when the hood set down properly in the back, it didn't fit the hood latch anymore. After I adjusted the hood for the "rear" condition I closed the hood and then couldn't get it to open. Finally pried it loose and readjusted the latch plate on the center grille opening panel. It will only move fore or aft. You want the hood latch pawl to come down in the center of the hole in the hood latch.

Thanks. It seems that I have a small fore/aft issue as well as the left rear being a little high. Funny, all I did was take the hood off......famous last words.....
