E4OD 1-2 shift is fine, 2-3 shift is fine, but about one second after 2-3 it goes to lock up. It has a Banks trans command on it from the previous owner. Advise? Thanks
Could be a FIPL problem.......... do you still have the Banks trans command bypass plug per chance........
From an OBN post........
I say unplug the TransCommand and install the "bypass plug" to isolate the problem first. That way you know if it is the aftermarket shift unit, or the factory stuff that is causing the problem.
I just finished an 89 E4OD and it does the same thing. I adjusted the FIPL back and forth, it seemed to change the shift points somewhat, but didn't effect the lockup to any great degree. This is in a van, so playing with anything on top of the engine is a pain. Under light load, the convertor locks shortly after the 2,3 shift and doesn't unlock for the 3,4. Towing a trailer the convertor doesn't lock until after the 3,4 shift, around 90 Km.
The Transcommand alters line pressure so I don't think it would change shift points, it would change the speed of the shift however. Getting it out of the loop would be a good idea to make sure it isn't involved. Don
OK now I'm confused. The TC on my E40D locks up around 35MPH and the trans shifts into 3rd at the same time. This is under normal start up. If I am in 1st or 2nd and trounce it, the TC immediately locks up. I thought the whole idea was for the TC to lock up as soon as possible? I also found out recently that the TC UNLOCKS if I put on the emergency flashers. Is this normal? I'm not happy with the way it "slides" into 3rd gear. I am going to check my FIPL and see if I can firm up that shift.
Thanks for the replies. Been gone all morning so just checking in. When I got the trans rebuilt last year, my guy had a heck of a time getting it to shift to his liking. We tried removing the banks unit and things were worse. We also spent a lot of time on the throttle position switch to get things where they are now. My problem with the TC locking up there is, with a load it kills all the boost (drop in RPM) and it takes longer to get up to speed. Thanks again
I used to have a signiture on here now I can't find it.
The truck is a 94 turbo 3.55 2wd turbo upgrade to 3"down and now 12 psi boost at WOT.
