Exhaust clearance?

Can anyone tell me how much clearance there should be where the exhaust pipe passes the gas tank. The tank is a Mustang tank mounted in the rear under the bed of my 56 F100 as many are. I just wonder how much clearance is consider safe or necessary. Thanks

2-3 inches seems standard, from what I've seen. The pipes aren't particularly hot by the time the gasses get that far aft. My side dump pipes are just hot to the touch, but won't burn the skin.

The gasoline in the tank will keep the tank cool, as long as there isn't a leak there isn't any problem. Same effect as the "trick" of boiling water in a paper cup with a cigarette lighter.

learpilot,
I have the mustang tank in my 55; my pipes are 3-4 inches from the tank, it took a while to get them mounted good.
