Well i know there has been many threads on cold air intakes and which to buy and stuff...and all i gotta say is man are they expensive.
i was wondering if i could buy one of those Cheap CAI kits off ebay(the chrome tube ones) and just stick a K and N filter on the end....would this not be the same?...those kits are only about $50 shipped...and a K & N filter is about $45...and thats about half the cost of a true full K & N one...and should do the same thing?...or is there more engineering inot the Pipe than i think?
also...is the Air Raid Throttle Body Spacer worth the money?
my truck is a 97' 4.6L V8 4x4....i have a local that wants to race me with his 00' V6 Mustang(Not a GT)....both his car and my truck are 5 speed manuals....but i have a feeling i wont beat him without something under the hood...any cheap reccomendations?...or should i not even agree to the race?
I would not race a V-6 Mustang against a 4.6 1/2 ton 4X4 nor would I race my 5.4 against the Mustang. It's apples and oranges and you have a huge weight penalty.
That type of kit is a hot air kit. It draws in hot air from under the hood and will make less power. You need a good one like from Outlaw Power. Their kit draws cool air from the fenderwell like the stock one.
The Mustang should beat you by about 10 car lengths due to your much heavier truck.
Throttlebody spacers are a waste of money on a port injected engine. They may help on a TBI system, but not your truck.
4.10 gears will give you the biggest gain, but it is costly because you have to do the front and rearends.
Adding the K&N to your stock system will maintain it as it is. The Outlaw intake draws air from outside through the fender as does the stock unit but it does not have the baffles that the stock intake has. Engine honk will be much louder with the hot air kit.
The two filters are different. I used a K&N in my stock intake, I'm not sure if you can use the Outlaw in your stock setup. It has slightly different dimensions.

It mounts different than the stock replacment filter. So they are not interchangable. Plus the MAF is mounts outside on the airbox on the Outlaw system.
