Opinions for project
Finally!!! Well my truck hasnt been getting the attention its use to..and this summer ill have a lot more time to work on it.
Ive always hated the m50d trans in it and came soo close to swapping in a ZF several times, so i want to take care of that. I see the many ZF swap threads so those will help a lot. And lately ive been driving my bros truck (has a strong 302 with headers etc...) which is really nice to drive, so im pullin the 300 in mine.
Im thinking the best route for me would be to find a parts truck for engine, trans, mounts brackets wiring computer etc....maybe a f250 with a 302 or 351 and with the ZF 5 speed?? Ive found a few locally already for anywhere between 500-1200 but havent really looked into it.
Just looking for some opinions on what i should get for the swap? Definately want to keep efi, and im not sure if i should be picky about what years?? Like....a 93 vs a 95 or somthing like that. Should i shoot for obd2 or no? Oh and yea mine is a 94 f150 4x4, so thats speed density not maf.

I just dropped $$ putting the E40d in my truck . I was going to get a zf and had a whole truck but My 94 is MAF and I couldn't get a ecm in the time period need . (like now) I use this truck 500-600 miles a week and needed it. If you go with zf about any year will be fine.(being a F250 + item it will be found with a 351 most of time. Being as yours is a manual all READY other than than harness and ecm change (if you put v8 in it) after trans install . Should be straight forward . Get the parts truck route. depending on motor you will need mounts, ecm, flywheel ,and if clutch parts are different ( I never played with zf as they never broke) Radiator Etc . it will be cheaper to have donor sitting there. Good luck
Thanks for the reply, just needed to be sure its the right choice.
Ive found some f250 4x4 zf trucks with 302s and others with the 351. Did certain years ever use different heads or change the motor somehow? On classifieds i see some 302s listed as roller motors, anyone care to exlpain what that means? I was thinking if i got the 302 id go with headers cam, and maybe the better flowing heads...forget what their called, gt40 somthing lol.

roller cam motors in trucks I believe started in 94 (roller lifter)
donor vehicle is best route
go for the 351 if you can find the setup you want
also look for 96 or 97 as most of these will be
OBD II, depending on the GVWR

It can be told now - my mid eighties F100 ran clear across country twice with a 302 and 33 inch swampers at ninety five MPH because I forgot to correct for the tire diameter when reading the speedo...
But what you WANT in that truck is a 351 windsor.

Thanks guys, much appreciated.
So it sounds like the best thing for me to get would be a 95-97 f250 4x4 351 with a ZF. Take out motor, mounts, trans, crossmember, computer stuff and harness, radiator, and all the accessories. Will the trans bolt up to my transfercase, and will i be able to leave my hyraulic clutch line and resevoir from my m50d? Thanks so much!!!!!!!

The 302 switched to the 351 firing order with the rollers 94 . Other than that the same till 96 when went OBDII. If you don't haul all time you can go with 302 the better mileage is nice. I own both and other than the car trailer on hills (slower) once/2 tines month That 302 will run right with the 351and gets 2-3 MPG on normal driving and even better on trip. . And with your being a manual its completely up to you and the donor truck you find.
Have fun its your truck and to do thing like this makes you like them all the more. Blood sweat and tears.

At 302 F-250 is always going to be a light duty truck, it will not have a ZF (it'll still be an m5) and it will not have a full floating rear axle.
The 302 did not change the firing order based on whether or not it had rollers. The roller 302's still had the old non-HO firing order (atleast it was that way on my 95 roller 302).
Look for a 94-96ish F-250 or F-350 with a 351 and drop that drivetrain in your truck.

Again, thanks for all the help. The mileage of the 302 and abundance of aftermarket stuff is nice, but ill have to get a 351 to get the zf with it. So mustang hit it right on the head, and nice truck btw. And then again a benefeit besides the zf...no replacement for displacement lol. "94-96ish F-250 or F-350 with a 351" ill keep lookin and let you guys know if i do anything.
Well, correction...
Doesn't have to be 94-96...but...94-96ish trucks of that size had a ZF S-47 instead of the S-42 and it is stronger. It's rated at 470 input tq vs 420.
You can get a S-42 from an 89ish through 93ish truck.
