Hi I have two trucks now. A 84 single cab 6.9l F-250 C-6 2x4 that I know the engine is good but pretty much everything else is falling apart, or rusted, and an 87 6.9l F-250 ext cab 5-speed 2x4 with a bad engine.
Here is my question. Will an 84 6.9 swap into an 87 that has a 6.9? If so what are the complications in doing this swap?
I would like to retain the 5-speed OD of the 87 and ditch the C-6.
The 84 and 87 are the same except the 87 had a better block. If I could remember off the top of my head the serial number stamped on the block would tell you if it was an updated version. One of the good people on this forum should put that information out soon as a response. 85-87 had the updated block but I did read somewhere that the tail end of 84 build had updated blocks so you my be lucky there. The rest is pretty easy the 5-speed will bolt up clutch parts etc just change the fly wheel (keep those bolts they are longer than the auto flywheel bolts). The 87 engine had the updated filter assembly and glow plug set up. 83-86 had the better GP system as far as cycling on coming on when needed but had a tendency to fail or burn out the controller. The 87-94.5 system comes on whenever you turn the key hot or cold (hot supposedly EPA compliant at the time for less smoke) which just likes to burn out your plugs quicker. The rest of the engine is basically the same.
The main problem with the 84 block is it is thinner in the area over the block heater.
The updated block was introduced in the last part of 85.
The thinner block is not an issue if you do not use the block heater.
Where you live will determine if that will be an issue for you.
If I were doing this swap, I would use the 87 glow plug system and fuel filter system.
Thats great to know I can swap them out! I live in FL so.. no block heaters needed.
One thing tho. Does anyone have a friend near the Sarasota/Tampa area that would like to help turn a few wrenches? I don't have a covered garage down here and I could use a little help.
