I recently and very quickly out of the blue am having SERIOUS problems with starting my 1983 Ford Bronco. I got home from work one day with no problem, went out the next day to go to work and turned the key, and what did I get? I "CLICK" and nothing. Ok so check the problem out. The Positive battery cable "siezes up" and begins to melt if you leave the ignition turned. So I replaced the starter solenoid. Same problem. Time to pull of the starter. I pull of the starter take it and get it tested. It runs fine. Put it back on the truck and it works. Sounds like the teeth are about to explode but it works. The next day, go to a friends, spend the night, try to go to work in the morning, "CLICK". No melting of the wires with a new Solenoid. Remove the starter, it now does NOT work. So I replace the starter. Still the same "CLICK". The flywheel turns with a screwdriver, the starter works, the solenoid is new. The wiring seems ok. I AM TRULY STUMPED. Hopefully there is someone out there who can help.
yo,
simple checks first:
inspect the ground connections; from battery to engine/frame to engine, etc. sometimes the connection(s) to ground goes sour or the wire strands corrode wihin the connectors; this causes high currents to melt the cables/connectors
and, when you removed the starter, did you notice shims under the bolts or starter bolt flange(s)? they are needed to align the starter (drive) with the flywheel..could be the cause of the grinding when starting..or the replacement starter is iffy on sizing, which happens at times.
