I'm looking at a 88 Bronco to buy. When I crawled underneath it, there was oil or lube (not sure) above the rear differential but there wasn't any on it. It was all over the body. Just a light film. Real black. How could this get there and is it something to worry about? There wasn't any forward or to the rear of the differential. Thanks.

Check where the differential air vent tube is connected. This could be a result of venting. I would recommend you remove the rear differential check plug and check the condition and level of the gear oil. OR Maybe it is grease from the drive shaft yolk? But you did say above the differential. Otherwise those are the only two lubricants in that area unless the previous owner was VERY VERY maintenance minded and attempted to grease the proverbial muffler bearing!!!!
