rattle noise?
knocking coming between the clutch housing and engine, it doesn't change with the speed or holding the clutch, no matter what I do the sound of marbles going around still the same, someone here told me a leak in the cat or exhaust, but if that was the case the sound should change with different rpms, faster or slower, and this is not the case. What I hear is more like a clank, clank, clank, like a diesel rattle sound if you know what I mean, but if it was related to an engine problem the sound should change with the rpms, and it's not doing it, and the sound it's louder when truck is cold in the morning
it doesn't go completely away but diminish after warm up?
I can hear it only with the windows down or if I'm standing outside near the truck.
BTW, the truck a 2000 3.0L 5spd manual 4x2 xtra cab.
First things first, check your welds on the heat sheilds on the cats. They go bad and then they rattle horribly.
If that turns out to not be the noise, start the truck with it cold, then get a lonnnngggg screwdriver, put it on the bellhousing, and put the other end to your ear, and pray the noise isn't coming from the bellhousing. CAREFULLY attempt to pinpoint it using this method, it's the only way to no for sure what's up.
Let's say the noise is coming from the bellhousin.
What in the bellhousin can make such a rattle noise, there's nothing in there that can rattle, Fyweel, no way, throwout bearing does not produce this kind of sound when bad, the only think I can think is the starter gear not releasing completely the flywheel?
What's you guess?

Forgot to mention, that my other 94 Ranger 2.3L 5spd manual, does the same kind of sound ,but that I know are the trany synchros, but the difference is that when I hold the clutch pedal down the sound goes away, that's not the same case on the 3.0, holding the clutch down won't take the sound away, but the sound on both trucks are exactly the same.
Can the sychros be bad there too, but why doesn't go away when I hold down the clutch like on my other 2.3 ???
