Been having starting trouble lately, turn the key and panel comes alive but truck doesn't turn over; chugs for a couple seconds then gives up. Starter never gets power. I replaced starter last month and ran it across the bench, the solenoid and starter are good. Being new to the PSD world I've heard of a starter solenoid realy. What's it's purpose and where is it located? (is it near the GPR). Batteries are good, 11.8 volts on voltmeter. Side note, what year did Ford start putting the solenoid on the starter?
Turn the key and the panel comes alive for a short period of time (less than 20 secs.), truck chugs a couple times but fails to turn over. Seems like the starter isn't getting power. Changed out starter last month, ran them across the bench and both solenoid and starter are good. Batteries both are at 11.8 volts on voltmeter. Being new to PSD world, I've heard of a starter solenoid relay. Where is it and what is it's purpose. Side note, what year did Ford start putting the solenoid on the starter? Thanks
Make sure the battery cables and those going to the starter aren't corroded. They need a good clean connection. Also, the batts should be more like 12.5 volts when the engine isn't running.
Yes, do check with a voltmeter to see if you're getting voltage at the starter.
