rattle fest 96 - HELP !!!
Our 96 Bronco does the same mind shattering screeching rattle where the cab and rear roof meet!..Found that the long trim screw in the middle of the headliner/reartop trim piece )behind the dome light) rubs against the inner part of the metal roof. We wedged insulating foam tape between the screw and the roof area the last time we took the trim off.
We have also replaced each trim screw with larger dia (#8's); but they loosen over time. It started again last night. I just may take the plastic trim pieces off and cover that area with some fabric trim and double back tape.
Did you also post this int he alt.autos.ford NG on 27 MAR 2001? I replied then, but never saw an acknowledgement.

Yes I posted that in the other newsgroup.
I was hoping for more than 1 opinion but......
So who have you consulted on this ? Check a dealer, mechanic, any service message that addresses this specifically ?
Did your fix work - is it still holding out ?
glad to hear from you. I understand about posting in a few places.
we found the source by using my daughter-in-laws stethoscope. my wife listened while i drove.
the sound appeared to be coming from my right, in the cargo area till she located that long screw area..then we took the trim off the back of the headliner and found that the center metal trim piece's screw's (a long one) threads were right against a piece of roof metal..
so is that an idea of the sound?..threads grinding against a flat piece of metal plating?it does loosen over time
we used larger diameter sheet metals screws and insulated the metal roof section with tape..but it wore through..
tomorrow, we'll remove the long screw for awhile, as well as that metal piece of trim that ties the two plastic trim pieces together..right behind the dome light.we did not bother going to a dealer..they can't do anything more than we did.
we may just try and use those sheet metal u clips up there..hard to fit in though
