potential purchase

I'm fairly new to the site, but have been reading quite a bit about the P.S. I'm considering purchasing a used '06 F-250 with the 6.0L. I'm looking for a fairly low milage vehicle (less than 25,000 miles). This would be my first diesel. I really don't NEED a diesel as I don't haul or tow much or even enough weight when I do tow to warrant a diesel purchase. It really comes down to the fact I just WANT one. I like the massive size of the F-250 and would prefer a diesel over the gasser because the resale values hold (or seems to) much better. However, the more I read about these the more I worry. I have spoken to some owners about the 6.0. Some love it, some hate it. It seems to be a reoccuring theme here as well. I have a buddy who was an engineer for International (navistar). He recommended to stay with the newer models, 06-07. However, as I read more and more, it still seems there are a lot of issues with injectors and turbos in the 06 and 07 models. I guess my question is, being new to diesels, what do I need to look out for? I really don't want to buy a truck older than '06, but I'm not willing to pay the price tag for an '08 right now (love the new generation). Anyway.... any recommendations on the best way to pick out a used powerstroke would really be helpful. I may go out this weekend and look at some. I'd really like to sell my current truck before I buy, but my arm could be twisted this weekend if the trade in is right.

Thanks for any help

Jay

P.S.... Converting from Chevy.... hope I'm not wrong here! If I don't go with a diesel, I'll end up buying a new F-150.

Go with your gut-you will know when it is right to buy. I am sure some of the "elder" users like Storm will be by soon to give you their two bits! Good Luck and let us know what you bought!

When I bought my '05 last September, they were hard to find around here. They'd be gone before I got there. I don't think that's the case anymore. Also heard the prices are dropping rapidly on 07's because the new 08's are getting here. I bought mine with 16k, and OASIS had nothing major on it. It's been trouble free so far. Look for posts by MRXLH in the 6.0 forum as to how to maintain them properly, and you should be good to go. Some will tell you to look for signs of coolant puking(do a search). Something else, 17" tires are somewhat easier to replace than the 18" ones. I will say that even though I don't enjoy the payment, it's still better than a new truck payment. And, every time I floor it I get a big grin on my face(muffler delete rocks!). If the power doesn't impress you during a test drive something is wrong with it.

I've been doing a lot of looking at this point. Thanks for letting me know about Oasis! Never would have known that. What are some numbers you are hearing on new '07 coming off lots? Like I said before, I need to weight the options of getting a new F-150 or a used F-250. I know that F-150 are going for really low numbers around here. I've seen 07 Kind Ranch editions fully loaded minus nav for $34-35K. I doubt the F-250 is that low. Ford's website doesn't seem all that reliable in terms of incentives. Any incentives on 07 F-250's these days that anyone knows of. 0% would be ideal (obviously), but, rightfully so, Ford is trying to shy away from 0%.

There has been some talk around here about mid 30's for new 07's(250/350). I'd keep looking. Can't remember what thread it was in though..............

Got the 0% on my 06 F-250 PSD for 72 months. Runs about $550 a month, very nice knowing that every payment is going towards principle. Have the tow command and misc. options for the XLT, no bells and whistles other than that, VERY HAPPY with the truck!

I bought my '06 new in Feb of 06, price was $32K and change. Have a good I volume dealer here and hit them on a very slow holiday weekend. They were hungry. Have loved it and as long as you maintain well, you should be OK. The warrenty is good, so if you buy an '06 you will still have some warrently incase of issues.

Pal I was in the same boat. Mine was a WANT not really a need. This is my first diesel and I've never owned anything bigger than a 150.

Yes, you'll get both ends of the spectrum when you talk about the 6.0...that argument will go on into infinity! I too read up before I went ahead and bought an 03 F250 King Ranch Crew 4x4 with 34K miles on it. Dealer was asking 32 for it I paid 27 and am a happy guy. I've not had a single problem with the truck! I bought the truck in mid Feb and it had 34K on it...it's now early May and I have 43K on it.

Go get your truck! As long as you get it for a decent price, go have fun driving!

PS, Welcome to the site Dude!

I currently own a '02 F250 7.3L Crew, 4x4 and will upgrade very soon to a '06 or '07 F350 6.0L, Crew, DRW, 4x4. I keep maintenance up on my '02 and will do the same with my new truck and will have no hesitation in trading my old truck in for an '06 or '07 6.0L.

There are alot of very knowledgeable people on this site with very good information to pass. Read through the forums and you are bound to find a thread about regular/routine maintenance. Follow their guidance and you should have no problems.
