Engine RPMs

Just bought a 2000 F-150 with the 4.2 V6 and 5 speed last week. Truck runs great but I have noticed that when I make an up shift from 1st to 2nd or from 2nd to 3rd, that the engine revs seem to " hang " for a second or so longer that what would feel as proper. I have talked to a couple of Ford dealers in the area and they say " that's the way they work". Any input??

Tranny has factory shift overlap where it engages both 1st and 2nd gear for a smoother transfer from gear to gear. note this causes more wear on clutch plates and a shift kit could be installed to prevent the overlap. However, you sacrfice longivity for comfort. (shifts hard with a kit)

That would be true if it were an auto trans, he has a 5-speed.
The computer does this to make a smoother transition when shifting. It is normal. My Mustang has done it since 1988 when I bought it.

Thanks for the info. My last ride was a 93 Ranger, 3.0 w/ 5-speed. As soon as the clutch was pushed, revs dropped like a stone, but then it was before OBD II and other more modern engine controls.
