Hey Franken-Truck? I've got some new cab mounts on order. They should be arriving sometime in the next 10 days, I think. Ordered them for Dennis Carpenter. I'm guessing at the shipping time. Anyway, I was wondering if you have any special "tricks" that you can share to help me with this. I'm probably going to be by myself on it and any input on your part will be greatly appreciated seeing how you've flipped yours around and such. Just keep in mind I'll be in the " open air garage " , and, I'll be working on the only running daily driver, so a weekend completion is a must! Thanks in advance.
Henry
edit: I've also got a new steering coupling on the way. I'll be putting that on after the mounts. Same question applies here also.
Firstly, we need to figure out what your calling a cab mount.
Are you talking about the sheet metal mount on the cab itself?
Are you refering to the poly/rubber cab mounts (body mounts)?
Are you refering to the frame cab mounts?
All three are technically cab mounts, I've heard them all refered to as cab mounts, and at least the first two are a really common repair/replacement item.
If your talking about the first one, try and take a week off of work and maybe think about removing the cab Ok, maybe not that bad but I can't imagine trying to do it under the cab. . .I have mine right in front of me and it's a royal pain
OK. I guess a little clarification on my part is needed. I was refering to the rubber mounts that go between the cab and frame. The kit that is coming from DC is supposed to have 'destructions' in it. I was just wanting to know of you had any ideas that might make it easier as I will be doing said repair by myself most likely. And hopefully, it can be done in one weekend, weather permitting................ As far as the coupling goes, I think I saw some previous posts in the 67-72 forum that I can research. If I remember correctly, it involves loosening the steering column clamp at the firewall and un-bolting the coupling from the input shaft on the steering box after which you have to pull up on the column and pull off the coupling. The coupling is splined as is the steering input shaft. Anyway, that's how I think it goes. "Must have more input!!!........................"
I honestly don't know, it took me taking my cab off and threading the mount bolt in through the top. I then procceded to beat the snot out of them with my 8lb beater to knock the bottom half out
Dunno how you might do it in the truck like that. . .maybe thread a slide hammer into the bottom of it? Or maybe take an angle grinder and cut into and through the bottom of it at and angle to take it apart. Might burn up the rubber though, and kill afew brain cells while your at it
Well, thanks anyway. I'll wait for the DC to arrive and see what they say. Seems lately that anything that I try to do always takes longer that expected. Take today for instance. I replaced the turn signal switch. It took forever to "fish" the new wires back down the steering column. Not to mention that it crapped up half of the pins that go into the connector that I had to cut off the new pins and splice the old ones back on. Sheech, my luck, Murphy's Law, you know the deal. Anywho, got it all buttoned up and the signals still don't flash!!!! &*^&^%$# Now I have to find a short, I think. More fun and games.............. I'll just keep pluging away at it. I'm not going to let it beat me. It'll just take longer than expected. Do you see a vicious circle pattern here???.........
Steve,
Cab mount problem solved. I have a buddy that lives in Middlesex County and after I called him he said he would be glad to help. Just have to wait for his garage to clear when he's done putting his truck back together later this summer.
As far as the turn signals, I had to take the cluster loose to find a second flasher. It was tucked up in the wire harness and behind the support fo the cluster opening. I replaced the switch and all the hassle involved in that for a stupid flasher I couldn't find. Lesson Learned! I hung the old flasher from my rear view mirror as a reminder to myself to check everything throughly before changing out parts.
I wonder how long it will be before I stop making mistakes like that sometimes. All I can do is stand there and shake my head after that one. Oh well, at least it works.
Now I can concentrate on doing some body work. Fill all the rusted out spots and I'm going to fill all the body seams too and try to make it a "smooth" bumpside. Not show quality but pretty enough for a daily driver. I'll even consider taken it to the Jenros thing maybe. ( Well, just as an excuse to go there. Can a truck full of filler and primer be at a show? LOL ) Don't forget to give me the address there so I can get directions from MapQuest.
Later
My cab is on hold till I can get my truck rolling again ie. finishing my dana 60 swap in the front. . .the family is finally getting sick of it sitting back there and having to mow around it
Dunno what the address is, but I can find something lol. I bet Rocket knows As for whats up there? Your truck would fit right in, just tell them its a work in progress
Working on it this week while on vacation. One section at a time. Grinding and filling bed seams Wednesday. Sanding, filling moulding holes Thursday. Doors, dunno. I have to decide whether to fill the usual rusted corners ( BIG holes ) or getting inner and outer skins to weld in later this fall. I hate big decisions. I leave it to my wallet to choose LOL. It's usually empty anyway! Later!
